Cantabile Chorale of York Region in Ontario, Canada is a 40-voice mixed adult choir with membership drawn from Thornhill, Richmond Hill and neighbouring areas. The choir was founded in 1973 by Robert Richardson, who has remained its musical director and major driving force ever since. Cantabile Chorale entertains audiences in and around York Region about eight times a year, drawing on an eclectic and ever-expanding choral repertoire ranging from sacred to secular and Bach to Broadway. Popular annual concert fixtures are The Joy of Christmas in December and Strawberries and Song in June. The choir frequently performs with other musical ensembles and choral groups, both as guests and hosts, including in recent years the York Symphony Orchestra, the Metropolitan Silver Band of Toronto, Pine Ridge Brass, the York Chamber Ensemble, Quintessence Bell Ensemble, MusicMakers of Cobourg, One Voice of Uxbridge, and the King Edward Choir of Barrie. In alternate years at Easter time choristers from local churches join with Cantabile Chorale in presenting a major contemporary sacred work as a charity fundraiser.
Landmarks of the choir’s history include winning the City of Lincoln (England) trophy in a cross-Canada competition in 1976, an appearance at Saskatchewan Sings in Regina during a visit to Western Canada in 1983, and a tour of Holland and England in 1985, culminating in a performance at Canada House in London. Cantabile has also performed throughout the Maritimes during tours in 1987 and 1989. In 1992 Cantabile hosted the Maureen Hunter Singers from Hull, England, prompting a return visit to Britain in 1993 to sing with the Maureen Hunter Singers and the Caldicot Male Voice Choir of Wales. Cantabile Chorale welcomed the Caldicot Male Voice Choir to Toronto in 1997, and received a return visit from the Maureen Hunter Singers in April 2003. More recently the choir has embarked on autumn weekend tours in southern Ontario every 2-3 years, including Muskoka in 2003 and eastern Ontario in 2006 and 2008.
Cantabile Chorale of York Region is a registered charitable organization dedicated to excellence in choral music and to providing amateur choristers with an opportunity to share their love of music with the community. We gratefully acknowledge the support of our business supporters and concert sponsors, our individual patrons and our many regular concert attendees.
